Wilson Building Bi-Directional Cellular Amplifier / Repeaters

Wilson Smart Technology™
In-Building Bi-Directional Cellular Amplifier / Repeater

wilson electronics wireless amplifier repeater system building

WHY WILSON

Wilson's In-Building Amplifiers offer exceptional performance without causing harmful interference to the cell site.

Wilson Electronics’ non down-converted bi-directional amplifiers are the most technologically advanced cellular amplifiers on the market today. Their most important feature is patented oscillation shutdown protection, which activates complete shutdown within just a few milliseconds to prevent harmful interference to cell sites. Wilson amplifiers also offer completely adjustable software-controlled automatic gain control, both on forward and reverse links, which allows the amplifiers to meet CDMA and GSM ACPR requirements. The amplifiers are invisible within CDMA and GSM systems. They also have the capability of following base station power requests which allows maintaining the full power dynamic range of the cell phone.

In Building Cellular Repeaters

An in building cellular amplifier has 3 major components. An outside antenna, amplifier and an inside antenna. The signal is received by the outside antenna from the cell site. It is then amplified and repeated to your cell phone through the inside antenna. When the phone transmits, the signal is received by the inside antenna, amplified, then repeated to the cell site via the outside antenna.

Features

  • Wireless operation. No physical connection to your phone is required.
  • Automatic Gain Adjusting in the event of oscillation and /or overload
  • Automatic shutdown on overload
  • TIA/EIA-98-E 3.5.1 Receiver Sensitivity better than -110 dBm
  • CDMA/rho > .912
  • Allows multiple phones to be use simultaneously.
  • Your phone will use less battery power for longer battery life.
  • Two inside antennas can be used using the Wilson 2 Way Splitter (see below)

Antenna Separation Requirements (Important)

wilson dualband cellular repeaterThe Wilson wireless building amplifier requires at least two antennas (not included). One antenna for outside and one for inside. The outside antenna must be a certain distance away from the inside antenna. IMPORTANT: The distance must be actual distance between the inside and outside antennas not just cable length.

Use the following guidelines when planning your setup:

  • 800MHz - 50db Amps - at least 50 feet apart (40 feet if roof is constructed of metal or heavy concrete)
  • 800MHz - 65db Amps - at least 75 feet apart (50 feet if roof is constructed of metal or heavy concrete)
  • 1900MHz - 65db Amps - at least 68 feet apart (60 feet if roof is constructed of metal or heavy concrete)

Do not turn on your amplifier unless you have at least the above distances between the inside and outside antenna. These distances must be maintained or the signal will just oscillate between the two antennas and no improvement will be noticed. Also, not enough separation can damage the amplifier.

The Wilson Stealth antenna, or Wilson Dome Antenna is recommended for inside use and the Wilson Trucker Antenna or Wilson Yagi Antenna (best choice) is recommended for outside use. More About Wilson Antennas.

How do I know which model is right for me?

There are several factors to consider when selecting the right amplifier/repeater for your situation.

  • What cellular service frequency range is your building located in? The best Amplifier/Repeater systems are network frequency specific. Wilson Electronics makes amplifier / repeaters for PCS 1900MHz, 824-894MHz range or Nextel (806-866MHz) networks.
  • You can find out the frequency range your building is located in by
    • Contacting your cellular service provider or
    • Checking with your local cellular service dealer.
  • Signal strength outside your building.
  • Inside area coverage required

How to approximate inside cellular coverage area.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In order for any repeater to be effective, you must have at least 2-3 bars of signal on the outside of the building. If there is little or no signal outside, the amplifier repeater will not radiate enough signal inside. In these cases, you might consider a Wilson DirectConnect Power Booster that you attach to your phone.

Wilson Smart Technology In Building Amplifier Specifications

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Wilson Amplifier / Repeater is used in locations where the signal from your service provider is fairly strong outside a building but weak inside the building. It's used where the wireless signal is blocked by the building walls or roof. If your signal is weak outside of your building, consider a power booster or antenna that connects directly to your phone (such as Wilson's DirectConnect) for better results.

How To Approximate Improved Inside Coverage Area

wilson soho dualband cellular amplifier repeaterWith a few calculations, you can get a very good idea of the improved cellular coverage area (distance from inside antenna) within your building. We have provided the following documents to help you calculate coverage area and to help you in the purchase and installation of your Wilson Amplifier/Repeater. (Note: A new browser window will open for the links below.) Contact us if you have questions or need additional help estimating coverage area.

Typically you will need 3 pieces of information to design your system: the frequency your service provider is using in your area, Received Signal Strength Reading outside the building and approximate length of cable you'll need.

Step 1. Determine Cellular Frequency

Determine what frequency your service provider is using in your area. Typically, your phone will work on multiple frequencies but your provider will only be using 1 frequency in the area your building is in. It will usually be in the range of 800MHz (including 850GSM), 1900MHz or Nextel iDen 800MHz. Contact your service provider's customer service or a local outlet for help.

Step 2. Get Received Signal Strength Reading

received cellular signal strength improvementPut your cell phone into test mode and get a Received Signal Strength Level (RSSL) reading. Take this reading outside the building preferably at a location where you can mount an outside antenna such as the roof on the same side of your building your service provider's tower may be. Use the pdf document "Standard Phone Test Modes " which has instructions for putting a cell phone into test mode and reading Received Signal strength. If your phone is not listed in this document or you need additional help getting a RSSL reading, contact Wilson Electronics tech support for help at 866-294-6996

Step 3. Estimate Antenna / Cabling Needs

wilson electronics 9913 cable yagi cellular antennas repeatersDecide on which outside (Wilson Yagi recommended) and inside(s) antennas you will be using. Estimate where you will locate the outside antenna, amplifier/repeater (located near an AC outlet) and inside antennas. Calculate the cable lengths required to connect the outside antenna with the amplifier/repeater. Concrete or metal interior walls will block the signal transmitted by inside antennas so determine if additional inside antennas and a splitter might be required. Sheet rock and studs (wood or metal) should not effect signal much if any. Calculate the cable lengths required to connect the inside antennas (and splitters if required) to the amplifier/repeater. See antenna recommendations in the "Check List" below.

Step 4. Calculate Coverage Area

Using the formula:

Improved Signal Strength Distance = Amp Gain + RSSL + Cable Factor + Splitter Factor + Antenna Factor

"Finding Coverage Area For Wilson Amplifier / Repeaters" calculator to determines approximate coverage area (distance from interior antenna(s). Cable, Splitter and Antenna factors. Use this guide to determine estimated coverage area using Wilson amplifier / repeaters. It provides the formula for estimating coverage considering factors such as Received Signal strength outside of building, length and type of cable, antenna type and splitters used.

Wilson SOHO DUAL BAND Amplifier/Repeater (800MHz & 1900MHz)

Wilson SOHO DualBand Amplifier/Repeater
Small Office / Home Office - For Smaller Areas, Up To 5 Users

wilson soho dualband cellular amplifier repeaterA single band Repeater such as those above will typically perform better and provide larger coverage areas for each frequency than a dual band Repeater. However if you need to cover smaller areas within a home or office, with up to 5 simultaneous users and improve the signal for both 800HMz and 1900MHz, we recommend the Wilson SOHO DualBand Amplifier / Repeater.
