Sprint/Nextel Frequency Change

Sprint/Nextel Frequency Change

In some areas, the frequency range that Nextel iDen networks uses has or will be changing from 800MHz to 900MHz. This will have an impact on what power boosters and repeater systems will work for you.

Nextel iDen 900MHz Areas

Unfortunately we do not currenlty carry any power booster or repeater system that covers the 900MHz Nextel iDen frequency range. We hope to have such systems within the next few months. However, we do carry magnetic mount and hole mount antennas that cover all of Sprint/Nextel iDen frequencies.

How to determine what network Nextel is using in your area

Most iDen phones work in both 800 and 900MHz iDen frequencies. They will start in 800MHz mode than switch to 900MHz if it finds a 900MHz frequency. Testing what network you are using requires you to put your iDen phone into test mode and read the "Current Frequency" field.

Follow these steps:

  • Put phone into test mode
  • Scroll down to "Current Frequency"
  • The first 3 characters are the current frequency. They are usually 8xxx (something like 863/864)
  • Watching the Current Frequency reading, dial a phone number on your Nextel iDen phone..
  • If the first 3 characters change to 9xx (936) than you are located in a Nextel 900MHz frequency areas.

Walkie Talkie Network

The Nextel Walkie Talkie network is expected to stay on the 800MHz frequency. You can continue to use Wilson's Nextel powerboosters and repeaters to boost the Nextel walkie talkie signal.

Future Nextel Network Changes

We do not know of any publically available schedule on where or when Nextel might change from 800MHz to 900MHz. You might contact your Nextel representative for this info. Be aware that if you're still in a Nextel 800MHz area, it could change sometime in the future.
